It’s a full moon every night at this restobar in Damansara Jaya.

Named Black Camp, a feature of this space is the gigantic moon that looms overhead, glowing gently against the black backdrop that is the ceiling.

The design firm behind this F&B space is Jong Interior Design, who managed to bring the great outdoors into a cosy environment. We got on a call to learn more about how they approached such a concept.

Bringing the outside in

Opened after the pandemic, Black Camp sought to provide a unique experience to diners who had been stifled for the better part of two years.

With everyone having been homebound for so long, what better and more refreshing concept could there be other than an outdoorsy one?

This context makes the camping theme at Black Camp a truly fitting one for its time. Even years after its inception, though, the design still remains rather immaculate.

The most attention-grabbing feature, as mentioned, is of course the moon.

Speaking to furnished.my, Jong of Jong Interior Design shared that the moon stands at a whopping 2 meters or so; the team had to dismantle the entrance just to let the ginormous orb through. The sourcing, done by the restaurant team itself, was surprisingly easy.

Moon aside, there’s also a cave-like setting designed for the bar, featuring an organic-looking structure really selling that natural look. This helps to section off the bar while keeping it on-theme with the rest of the ambience.

To evoke the imagery of tents, cloth tapestries hang overhead, overlapping at times to create a dynamic and artistic vibe. It also helps make the covered parts feel cosier, making the tall, dark ceilings feel less imposing.

Further bringing the outdoors into this warehouse, there are gravelled sections as well as verdant plants everywhere.

Thinking long-term

When designing a unique space, it’s easy to just think about the initial results but forget what comes after—maintenance.

Thinking about the longevity of the design, Jong believes, is a crucial duty of interior designers.

And we’re not talking about trends, but rather, basic things like hygiene as well as wear-and-tear.

With all the tropical plants around, it’s paramount that proper upkeep is done so that there aren’t issues with bugs and whatnot. Keeping abreast on details such as the tapestry will also help ensure the space looks and feels pristine for years to come.

As for the gravel, the design firm also worked to determine a clean-up plan with the restaurant owners.

This care for the upkeep as well as the overall concept of the restaurant is emblematic of Jong Interior Design’s approach to commercial spaces—to be forward-thinking and innovative.

Nowadays, camping-themed eateries are more common, but it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Black Camp had been the earlier few who adopted and pioneered the concept in the Klang Valley.

To bring designs that others haven’t tapped into yet is the pinnacle of what the firm aims to achieve with their commercial projects. After all, don’t we all want to dine at and experience unique environments?

With this in mind, we hope to see more unique commercial designs and concepts from interior designers such as Jong Interior Design.
